Ok girls, here’s your educational experience for the week…yes, I’m bored!
Lesson #1 – table etiquette:
On the last Wednesday of each August, the town of Bunol, Spain draws 40,000 people for the festival “La Tomatina” This is the biggest tomato fight in the world! They bring in over 100 tons of plum tomatoes and spend over 24,960 euros for this festival. The tomatoes are dropped by the truckload and young people dash all around smashing them and throwing them about. Why?! Well, they say it started in the 1940’s from a battle between friends.
So I found myself asking if this was something they all looked forward to – ruining a good pair of clothing every August, etc. Apparently this is mostly celebrated by the “human degenerates” and this all night public revelry is frowned upon for the rest of the year.
Lesson #2 – religion:
Devout Hindu’s have just celebrated the birthday/re-incarnation day of Lord Krishna. The day of celebration is the 27th of August but most school children celebrate in the days before by doing performances in their schools where they get to dress up like royalty and the Hindu god, Krishna. They play music and act out the life of this god. Here’s the strangest part. People all over (including blind children) form human pyramids to reach a clay pot filled with butter. When they reach this pot, they break it and the butter comes spilling down. Why!? Lord Krishna and his friends used to steal butter like this from villagers back in his day. This festival is called “Janmashtami” oh yes, and this god is believed to be purple…
